How do I know what size bike helmet my child needs?
A child’s helmet needs to fit at the time you buy it. Use the 2-V-1 rule to ensure a proper fit
- The helmet should cover the top of the forehead and should rest about 2 fingers’ width above the eyebrows.
- Straps should meet snugly in a V-shape just below the ears.
- One finger should fit between the chin and chin straps.
How do I choose a helmet for my child?
The helmet should sit level on your child’s head (not tilted back!), and it rest low on the forehead. Check that the bottom edge of the helmet is one to two finger-widths above the eyebrow. With the helmet securely fastened, test your child and ask if she can still see and hear clearly.
How do I know if my bike helmet is too small?
Check the Fit
- The helmet must be level on your head.
- The front edge should be no more than an inch or so above your eyebrows.
- The strap should fit closely under your chin.
- Straps should meet just below your jaw and in front of your ears, forming a V under your earlobes.
What happens if your helmet is too big?
A too -big shell with a really thick liner can mean too much wind resistance and too much weight on your neck. A well-fitting helmet will give you a bit of “fish-face.” It should be a small struggle to get the helmet on. Your cheeks should be a bit squished, you should not be able to eat anything or chew gum in there.
Do bike helmets expire?
The government testing body in the US, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), recommends replacing a bicycle helmet every five to 10 years. And many manufacturers tell you to get rid of your helmet after as little as three years.
Does my child need a helmet?
Your doctor will check your baby’s head size and shape at each well-child visit. These visits happen about every 2 months during infancy. If your baby has a large flat spot that isn’t getting better by about 4 months of age, your doctor may prescribe a helmet.
